Letters to our Partner Church

writing letters to Kissolymos

This last Sunday children in our 2nd-5th grade classes saw pictures and video of children from our partner church in Kissolymos, Transylvania, in a fabulous presentation by guest speaker Tom Mumford, member of the Partner Church Committee. The roots of Unitarianism go back a long way in Transylvania, and the church in Kissolymos was built in the 1790′s.

Our kids then worked to write short letters and make pictures about our life here, which will all be sent to the children of our partner church.  They drew pictures of their families, their homes, their video game systems, and other things they thought would be interesting to the children.

If you are curious about how Partner Church relationships work, you can read more at the Unitarian Universalist Partner Church Council website.

adult ed committee

The Adult Education Committee is dedicated to bringing OUUC a variety of interesting and transformative classes.  The folks on this committee love learning, and we love the work of creating this buffet of learning opportunities that are offered in two sessions: Fall and Winter/Spring.  We are currently working on an exciting line-up of classes for next Fall.

Still to come this year: Photography for the Not-Quite Beginner (full), The Wisdom of Poetry (starting April 23rd), and Homelessness is Not for Sissies (starting April 27).

Intergenerational Service this week

Granddad's Prayers

This Sunday there will be no RE classes, and the children are invited to stay with their families in the service, which celebrates Earth Day.  In fact, the 2nd-5th graders have learned a song which they will sing in the service, and the middle school group will be doing a reading.

The service will also have a drum meditation, two stories, and many short readings.  It’s been planned with children in mind.

One of the stories is Granddad’s Prayers of the Earth, from the lovely picture book by Douglas Woods.  In this story, a boy and his grandfather share thoughts about the spirituality of all life on Earth during a hike.  Later, the grandfather dies, and the boy is able to find comfort from those ideas they had discussed.  This Sunday we will only be telling the hike portion, but the book is worth borrowing to read at home.

Come celebrate the Earth this week!

A Soggy Easter was still a lot of fun

egg hunt

Despite rain, the children were outside on Sunday for the annual Easter Egg Hunt.  Our Middle Schoolers hid hundreds of eggs in the playground and the lawn and forest behind the church, and at each service the kids braved the wet to hunt for them.

It was worth getting wet, however, as everyone enjoyed both the hunt and the prizes they found in their eggs.

This Sunday in Religious Education

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

This Sunday is Easter, and our children’s classes will be enjoying a party during class time.  At both the 9:15 and the 11:00 service, we will have boardgames and more active games such as spoon and egg races.  There will also be an egg hunt, so remember to bring your basket!

Note: I am still looking for parent volunteers to help this Sunday, and I’ll still accept more stuffed plastic eggs for the egg hunt.

The RE program collects food for homeless kids

food drive poster

Last Sunday, the kids in our 2nd-5th grade class learned about a program called Homeless Backpacks, which provides food for homeless and at-need students.  The students can pick up the food packets at the nurse’s office, to bridge the nutrition gap on weekends and extended school holidays.  While we are enjoying Spring Break this week, it wouldn’t be fun if you were going hungry because of it.

There will be a bin in the foyer, and please bring donations of foods such as cereal or protein bars, cup of noodles, applesauce or pudding cups, or juice boxes.  We will collect food items for the next several weeks.

More about water rights in South Africa

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

A few weeks ago, when we launched the Guest At Your Table program, Rev. Vaeni and I told a story about water rights in South Africa, and the struggle to stop the water company from installing prepaid meters in low-income neighborhoods.  The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee supported the activists who took their case to court.  The story isn’t over, however, and UUSC continues to support the human right to water.  Read more about it, here.  This is the kind of work that you support when you put money in that Guest at Your Table box.  And please remember to return your boxes to the church office this Sunday!
