becoming naomi leon

Our first ever All Ages Book Club meeting was quite fun – a mixing of perspectives and ideas from several ages.  The November meeting will be Friday, November 20th at 7pm, and we will be discussing Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan.  This story of family finds the children living happily with their grandmother, until their mother reappears after many years and wants to split the kids apart.  To stay together, the family must journey to Mexico and ensure the support of their father for their living arrangements.  Family and identity are explored as Naomi searches for both her father and her own racial and personal identity.

Bike and Walk for Climate Change Action!

Saturday, October 24, 2009

10 am to noon

Join 350 families on the Chehalis-Western Trail biking and walking as a public witness for climate change action in International Climate Change Action Day. Our October 24th event in Thurston County is one of hundreds across this country and the world – our call for governmental leaders to address the global climate crisis by adopting carbon dioxide emission limits of 350 parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere.

Pump up your bike tires or lace up your sneakers and be one of 350 families on the Chehalis-Western Trail at 10 am. Participants are urged to come from all directions to the trail – south, north, east and west – riding from your homes, or parking lots near the trail’s many entry points. Our goal is to minimize car traffic and parking at any one point.

Your destination is Bush Park, a Lacey City Park along the Yelm Highway between College Street and the Chehalis Western Trail. At Bush Park, you will be entertained by the Hogwash Family Band and have an opportunity to pick up information on the climate crisis and the worldwide 350 campaign. The brief program will feature County Commissioner Sandra Romero, Bernie Meyer as Mahatma Gandhi, and voices of young people speaking for a hopeful future for this planet.

Bike and Walk for Climate Change Action is free, but we welcome your support through the purchase of an event button, available at a table in the church foyer between services.

Organizers of the October 24 event are Washington State UU Voices for Justice, OUUC’s Green Sanctuary Committee, Interfaith Works Earth Stewardship Committee, and Earth Care Catholics. Fun For All At the Annual Dinner

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

This last Sunday was our Annual Dinner, gathering the whole church together for a marvelous meal of salmon.  Local company, Fun For All, was contracted to provide entertainment for the kids, and older kids found the grounds of the Lacey Community Center to be a great place for soccer and capture the flag.

We won’t have any regular RE classes this Sunday

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

At both the 9:15 and the 11:00 services this week all the classes for preschool-6th grade are canceled.  Instead, OUUC families are asked to attend the public witness the church is holding at 11:00 at Tivoli fountain on the Capital campus.  This is the fountain that you can see from Capital Way.  The witness is part of the UUA effort “Standing on the Side of Love”, supporting diverse families and equal rights for GLBT.

(There will still be an OWL session at 11:00 and youth group and young adults group at the church at 12:30)
