Evolution has a merciless editing process: what doesn’t aid survival doesn’t last long. And yet play behavior has persisted across species through it all. Humans are especially evolutionarily primed toward playfulness. We tend to dismiss play as mere entertainment, a frivolous aside. But what does play have to do with our survival as a species, and the survival of the earth?
